Entrepreneur. Mom. Wife. Daughter. Sister. Caregiver. Friend. For many of us, these are the many hats we wear as we go about the thousand tasks we juggle day to day.
But let us ask you this: Where does the Self come in?
As we work towards our goals, making sure we take care of ourselves is paramount. Cars can’t run on empty tanks, and neither can we.
Sure, there are going to be days, regardless of plans, when we feel like we’re being pulled every which way. This is when we embrace that wellness wheel and make it our own because it is such an important tool for us driven mamas! Having a well-rounded approach to our own wellness can help keep us centered and focused on the things that matter most.
💧Spiritual Wellness
💧Intellectual Wellness
💧Social Wellness
💧Occupational Wellness
💧Financial Wellness
💧Environmental Wellness
💧Emotional / Mental Wellness
💧Physical Wellness
Although all 8 parts of the wellness wheel are equally important when it comes to cultivating wellness as a working mom, there are 3 we consider non-negotiables.
Emotional / Mental Wellness
We cannot stress this enough. Taking care of your emotional and mental health is vital in order to help you deal with the challenges that life throws your way. A SilverCloud Health survey found that since the start of the pandemic, mental health is what working moms struggle with the most, with 36% of moms feeling like they don’t get the support they need. (We think it’s probably higher than that, though!)
Stressors can be found everywhere. Charging up your emotional and mental wellness will help you to be more resilient to the stress that will inevitably happen, and will also allow you to adapt to overall changes more sustainably, making you better equipped to handle life’s challenges.
Social Wellness
The same study found that as many as 37% of mothers feel isolated. We are social creatures after all, and part of being human is feeling connected and having a sense of belonging with others. The old proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child” still holds true today. Having a support network is crucial in helping one stay grounded and centered as we go for our goals.
On the flip side, setting healthy boundaries also allows us to preserve our energy to focus on the important stuff. With the many hats we wear day in and day out, prioritizing who and what needs our attention can help keep us from stretching ourselves too thin.
Financial Wellness
It can be overwhelming when things are happening all at once. We can start to feel like we’re losing control and not grasping any one thing completely. Keeping a firm grip on your financial wellness is a great way to anchor down and gain a sense of stability.
But what is financial wellness exactly? It can include anything from just getting your financial logistics organized, to creating a household budget, to even just donating to a meaningful cause. Because the last thing you want is to rack up extra charges or be penalized for missing payments and overlooked bills. And being able to help others in need can be rewarding in itself, not to mention the tax benefits. Additionally, putting in place some financial supports, tools or habits to cultivate greater financial wellness is helpful for the whole family regardless of socio-economic status.
